Puti fish/olive barb is a kind of small freshwater fish available plenty in West Bengal and Bangladesh. We can prepare so many dishes with this fish, now will prepare jhal. The marinated sor puti fishes are fried ,and then simmered in a thick gravy, made with the paste of mustard seeds and ginger and sometimes added with green peas finished in a warm, spicy mustard flavored sauce and this is how to make motor suti diye sor putir jhal/olive barb fish curry.
Ingredients
- Sor puti fish-02
- Green peas-1/4th cup
- Mustard seed 3 tspoon
- 2 tsp turmeric powder
- mustard oil-2 tbsp+fry(4 tsp)
- ½ tsp panchforons panch phoron-1/2 t spoon (It comprises mouri (fennel seeds), methi (fenugreek seeds), kaalo jeere (black cumin seeds), zeera(cumin seeds), and a typically Bengali spice, called radhuni)
- green chili-02
- onion-01(grated)
- Coriander leaves
- Salt to taste

Wash the fish, rub it with turmeric powder and salt and keep it aside for 20 minutes-30 minutes.
In a blender take three spoon mustard seeds, ½ inch ginger, one green chili and with the help of water make a smooth paste.
Then take a kadai or deep fry pan, put oil, heat it & deep fry it & keep aside.
In a same oil put panchphoron for tempering, after cracking sound comes add onion and fry for 2 minutes or till the color changes to golden brown.
Now add the paste, the green peas, little turmeric powder and salt & add 1 cup water& cover the lid ,allow it to cook for 3 to 4 mins
open the lid , add the fishes , green chili.
Cook for another two minutes to mix the gravy with fishes nicely.
Turn off the burner, sprinkle ½ spoon of mustard oil, coriander leaves over the gravy and serve hot with steam rice.
