How to make delicious chicken dak bungalow
The recipe is very old i.e. British era. When the Govt. officials are in late while on an official tour, they used to spend the night in the dak bungalow means Govt. rest house. There used to have one khansamah(cook, steward cum caretaker) who prepared the meal. The meal comprises rice, dal, veg curry, salad, and one chicken or mutton dish. They used to prepare the meal by using the local spices or ingredients or whatever is the availability. Chicken dak bungalow was also made with very little whole spices and became very delicious, so it became very popular. Ingredients
- 750g – Chicken (cut into medium-sized pieces)
- Egg (hard-boiled) -3
- Potato (medium-sized) -2(cut into 2 halves)
- Onion (thinly sliced) -2 large
- 4 (slitted)- Green chilies
- Turmeric, red chili, cumin, and coriander powder-3/4th tsp each
- Salt to taste
- Mustard oil -½ cup
- Garam masala powder -¼ tsp
For marinating
- Yogurt (whisked) -1 cup
- Ginger, garlic paste-1 tsp each
- 1 tbsp- Lemon juice
- Turmeric powder-1 tsp
- salt
For tempering
- bay leaves-02
- 1 inch – Cinnamon
- Cumin seeds-1 tsp
- Red chili whole-02
How to make delicious chicken dak bungalow
Wash chicken pieces and add curd, ginger garlic paste, turmeric powder, salt, and lemon juice in a bowl for marinating. Mix well and keep it aside for at least 2 hours.
Peel the potatoes and cut them into halves, wash and keep them aside.
Mix some turmeric powder with boiled eggs, and keep aside.
Heat oil in a hard-bottomed pan/Kadai, add boiled eggs, and fry until golden in color. Remove and keep aside.
In the same oil add the potatoes, fry them until golden, remove and keep aside.
In the remaining oil add bay leaves, cumin seeds and cinnamon for tempering.
Add onion; fry it until light brown;
Now add the marinated chicken and cook for 2-3 minutes then add turmeric, cumin, and coriander, salt and red chili powder and stir it for 2-3 minutes.
Add fried potatoes, mix it well then add water and cover it to boil for 10 minutes.
Uncover the lid and gently placed the eggs and cook for another 2 minutes.
Take it out from the oven, and sprinkle a pinch of garam masala over it.
Garnish it and serve it with rice or roti.
