Raw Banana Thoran / plantain stir fry with coconut is a delectable and healthy recipe, which can be prepared with minimal use of ingredients within a very short time. Kerala Vazhakka Thoran is a dish made with raw plantains or kacha-kola in Bengali. It is a popular dish prepared in many festivals like Onam, which goes very well with rice and sambar.
Raw banana is a powerhouse of nutrients; as per pharmeasy, it controls blood pressure to improve heart health, manages body weight, and controls diabetes.
In raw Banana Thoran, we are using raw banana or plantain, which is combined with mild spices and freshly grated coconut.

The ingredients required for this recipe are
- Raw banana / plantain-3
- Chana dal/ Bengal gram dal-1 tbsp
- Shallots cut in roundels or medium dice cut onion-½ cup
- Whole red chilies-2
- Green chili-2
- Cumin seeds-1/2 tbsp
- Curry leaves-2 sprigs
- Turmeric powder-½ tsp
- Red chili powder-½ tbsp
- Fresh coconut slices-¼th
- Coconut oil-2 tbsp
- Mustard seeds-1 tsp
- ¼ cup Water
- Salt, to taste
How to Make Delicious Raw Banana Thoran Recipe
Take a blender jar, and add the coconut slices, green chilies, and cumin seeds
Make a coarse paste, and keep them aside
Cut the raw banana into small dice size, put them in water, and keep them aside
Heat oil in a pan, and add the whole red chilies, cumin seeds, chana dal, and curry leaves for tempering
As they start spluttering, add the dice-cut onions and sauté them for a minute
Add turmeric powder, and mix them well
Now add the grated coconut and mix well
Add the small dice cut raw banana, and sauté them for a minute
Now add salt and mix them
Add water, and mix them
Cover the lid and allow them to cook for 2 minutes on medium flame
Open the lid and add red chili powder and stir them on high flame for a minute
Turn off the heat and transfer them to a serving plate and serve hot with rice and sambar.
